"Birds of Passage" refers to the journey of immigration and is a tribute to past and present immigrants, who have always brought such vitality to the cultural life of East Boston.Often referred to as "Boston's Ellis Island", the East Boston Immigration Station, founded in 1920 amd demolished in 2011 was located adjacent to the Boston Harbor Shipyard. Through its doors passed immigrants from all over the world, including many of the Irish and Italians who came to live side by side with Jewish immigrants, all replacing the original British who had settled East Boston in 1629. The journey of immigration is an endless one and the struggles, challenges and victories apply toeach new wave. We are all sons and daughters of immigrants- birds of passage ourselves - as we move through our lifetimes. Each "bird"is traced around a work glove found in the Boston Harbor Shipyard and is a tribute to the men and women who work here
